Property Funding Resources

These are not your grandpa's mortgages.

There are many options to finance the purchase and renovation of historic properties. From buying with friends to receiving tax credits and grants, we’ve put all the resources you need in one place.

Alternative Purchasing Options

Purchase a Historic Property with Friends or Family

You don’t have to go it alone! Houselore is at the forefront of promoting alternative and affordable methods to purchase and restore historic properties. One of the fastest ways to purchase the historic property of your dreams is to split the cost with others who share your passion.

A ‘Tenants in Common’ agreement allows you and others (there’s no limit on how many, but generally 3-5) to divvy up the cost of purchasing a property in cash or with a mortgage. The contributions of each person do not have to be equal, and can be based on what each of you can afford.

For example – Thomas, Stacy, and Matthew decide to purchase a £900K, 8-bedroom historic property together. Thomas is responsible for £400K, Stacy for £300K, and Matthew for £200K. This means that Thomas has a 45% share, Stacy has a 33% share, and Matthew has a 22% share. All of you have a right to live at the property. You can set out the terms of paying off the mortgage (if applicable) and any other details such as passing on your share and the distribution of any income from the property in a formal  ‘Tenants in Common’ agreement.
